So there’s a balance of making things authentic, but using creativity to deal with issues without dragging people’s values in the mud in the process. We want our movies to be seen by audiences of all ages. We try to keep it real, but we also mindful that the audience has values and morals that need to be honored. We talked to firefighters in Albany as we were writing “Fireproof.” We had police officers on the set of “Courageous” helping us make sure we were making all the law enforcement themes very realistic.
How were you able to make these characters relatable? We will seek counsel and do research concerning each issues before we incorporate it into the script. Just like scripture, we want to connect with people right where they are and then take them where they need to go. Do you think that helps connect your audience? Some of your characters are pretty broken. We will develop story lines that comes from real life … and we try to put our characters in context that are very realistic. If you think about anything that you would label and cheesy, it’s usually because it comes off as forced or canned or out of date or awkward because it’s not realistic.
